In a wide-ranging interview with Al Jazeera, senior Hamas official Mousa Abu Marzouk condemned Israel of undermining the ceasefire and warned of a return to war. He defended Hamas’s commitment to the truce, criticized U.S. policy shifts, and cautioned against excluding Hamas from Gaza’s future — warning it could trigger chaos and internal conflict.

 Why it matters:

Abu Marzouk’s remarks come at a critical juncture in the fragile ceasefire between Hamas and Israel. His warnings about Israeli violations and U.S. complicity raise questions about the durability of the truce and the credibility of international mediation. The interview also signals Hamas’s willingness to engage politically, but only if its role is acknowledged, and Gaza’s existing institutions are not dismantled under foreign pressure.

The big picture:

As post-war arrangements for Gaza take shape, Abu Marzouk’s comments reflect a broader power struggle over who will govern and rebuild the Strip. With shifting global sentiment, U.S. recalibration, and Arab states proposing new security formulas, Hamas is positioning itself as indispensable. The group warns that excluding it from future governance could trigger internal chaos, a scenario with far-reaching implications for regional stability and Palestinian political unity.

What he's saying:

Abu Marzouk warned of the risks of excluding Hamas from Gaza’s future governance.

He also criticized U.S. policy shifts and defended UNRWA’s role in Palestinian society.

Abu Marzouk said the U.S. is now the sponsor of the ceasefire deal, and must act “neutrally and fairly.”

“America intervened to save Israel from itself,” Abu Marzouk said, citing Israel’s isolation and waning support.

"40% of American Jews now support Hamas, and 450 prominent Jewish figures have distanced themselves from Israel."

Dismantling Gaza’s current police force would lead to chaos.

“Hamas is not just an organization,” he said. “It is a spirit, an idea, and a hope.”

He defended the existing Gaza police, noting that 17,000 officers maintained order under bombardment.

“Expelling them,” he warned, “would repeat the mistake of disbanding Iraq’s army, and lead to chaos.”
