Why it matters:
Beijing views the move as a direct challenge to its sovereignty and a violation of the one-China principle. The Chinese government considers Taiwan a part of its territory and opposes any foreign military support to the island.
What they’re saying:
Zhang Xiaogang, spokesperson for the ministry, said the U.S. is “playing with fire” and that arming Taiwan is a “dangerous gamble” that will come at a “real cost” to Washington.
“The Taiwan question is the first red line that must not be crossed in China-U.S. relations,” Zhang said. He urged the U.S. to stop sending “erroneous signals” to pro-independence forces and to avoid military engagement with Taiwan.
The big picture:
China says the act’s provisions interfere in its internal affairs and threaten global peace and stability. The warning signals are rising tensions between the world’s two largest powers over Taiwan, a flashpoint in their strategic rivalry.
