Ammar al-Hakim, leader of Iraq’s National Wisdom Movement, launched his election campaign with a speech calling for national unity and warning against foreign meddling in Iraq’s internal affairs.

Why it matters:

These statements come at a time when the United States is applying significant pressure on Baghdad to disarm the Iraqi resistance movement, Hashd-al-Shabi (Popular Mobilization Units), particularly following recent developments in Syria and Lebanon.

Hashd-al-Shaabi was launched in Iraq at the initiative of Ayatollah Sistani to confront ISIS.

What he's saying:

Hakim emphasized that Iraq’s decisions must remain independent despite external pressures.

He said Iraq should serve as a bridge for dialogue, not a stage for conflict. He emphasized the importance of fostering friendly ties with Arab neighbors, maintaining balanced relations with Iran, Turkey, and other regional powers, and establishing channels of understanding with the U.S., Europe, Russia, and China to safeguard Iraq’s sovereignty and future.

“We want a moderate Iraq that respects the identity of its majority, because Iraq belongs to everyone. No individual or group has dignity unless all do.”

“We will never allow the return of authoritarian or dictatorial rule under any name or circumstance.”

He introduced the campaign slogan: “Don’t miss the opportunities,” and rejected any claim that followers of Ahl al-Bayt are unfit to govern, saying their awareness, sacrifice, and patience were the decisive forces in defeating terrorism and resisting ISIS and sectarian strife.
