Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmail Baghaei, has censured France, Britain, and Germany for their “irresponsible and obstructive” conduct regarding the nuclear issue over the past few months.

The big picture:

Esmaeil Baghaei made the remarks during his weekly press briefing on Monday, criticizing the three European states for abusing the dispute resolution mechanism under the 2015 nuclear agreement, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

What he's saying:

“The European troika practically misused the so-called dispute mechanism to impose Washington’s demands on the United Nations Security Council,” Baghaei said.

He added that the three conditions set by the European states to avoid such misuse were “illogical,” but Iran, in line with its own interests, decided to engage with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) within the framework of its safeguards commitments.

Baghaei further dismissed as “unreasonable” the Europeans’ condition linking Iran’s talks with the United States to the nuclear issue.

Reaffirming Tehran’s commitment to diplomacy, the spokesman said, “We believe the diplomatic path never closes. We will make use of all tools to safeguard our national interests, and whenever we find diplomacy to be effective and fruitful, we will not hesitate to use it.”
