Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla on Thursday (October 2) via the social media platform X, after the flotilla organisers said Israeli forces stopped 14 boats carrying foreign activists and aid bound for Gaza.

Why it matters:

World leaders' condemnation indicates Israel's increasing isolation internationally, being viewed as a "pariah state". World leaders are very concerned about Israel's disregard for international norms and treaties and of course the on-going genocide in Gaza.

What they're saying:

Bolivia’s President Luis Arce Catacora and Cuba’s President Miguel Diaz-Canel expressed their forthright condemnation of Israel. Other leaders such as Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares and Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris expressed their concerns at the latest developments on Wednesday (October 1).

Ireland's Tánaiste, Simon Harris said, "I am keeping in close contact with my officials who are working on the ground and have also spoken with EU counterparts on the Global Sumud Flotilla. Tonight’s reports are very concerning. This is a peaceful mission to shine a light on a horrific humanitarian catastrophe.”

The big picture:

The flotilla, transporting medicine and food to Gaza, consists of more than 40 civilian boats with about 500 parliamentarians, lawyers and activists. It is the most high-profile symbol of opposition to Israel’s blockade of Gaza.

Israel's navy had previously warned the flotilla was approaching an active combat zone and violating a "lawful" blockade, and asked them to change course.
