Colombian President Gustavo Petro ordered the expulsion of Israel’s entire diplomatic delegation in Bogota on Wednesday (October 1), following the detention of two Colombian women participating in a humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza.

Why it matters:

The move isolates the Israeli regime even further diplomatically and boosts Israel's reputation as a "pariah regime".

What we're hearing:

President Petro announced the decision on social media, calling the detention of the two women as a potential “new international crime” by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He immediately terminated Colombia’s free trade agreement with Israel.

What's going on:

Protesters gathered in Bogota, condemning the detention of Manuela Bedoya and Luna Barreto, who were onboard the Global Sumud flotilla. “It is absolutely unjust—these are civilians trying to deliver aid to a besieged, starving population, and the world does nothing,” said protester Diana Torres. Activists also demonstrated outside the headquarters of Colombia’s National Business Association (ANDI), accusing it of maintaining commercial ties with Israel amid the ongoing conflict.

State of play:

The Israeli regime has seized most of the vessels of the Global Sumud movement. The detained activists have been transferred to an Israeli port. The group called for mobilizations against some countries' economic complicity with Israel’s actions in Gaza.
