Speaking to reporters in New York on Tuesday, Araghchi said he had held over 31 bilateral meetings with his counterparts on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, where key decisions on economic cooperation were reached.
He described China’s Global Development Initiative summit as an important event.
Araghchi explained that in recent days, extensive meetings were held with the three European signatories to the 2015 nuclear deal, as well as with the UN Secretary General and the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency. “We were faced with completely unreasonable demands aimed at extracting concessions from the Islamic Republic of Iran, while we presented our entirely reasonable proposals, which even the Europeans admitted were rational,” he said.
He added that efforts had been made to reach a compromise between the proposals of both sides, but the excessive demands of the United States, backed by European countries, blocked any agreement.
The United Nations has confirmed the reactivation of “snapback” sanctions against Iran after the Security Council failed to adopt a resolution extending Resolution 2231 by six months.
The measure followed the formal invocation of the mechanism last month by France, Britain, and Germany — original parties to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Iran, along with Russia and China, strongly rejected the move as politically motivated and devoid of any legal basis under international law.
