The session at the Security Council (UNSC) to vote on a draft resolution about a six-month delay of the snapback mechanism for Iran began.

Why it matters:

Iran warned that the country will halt cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) if United Nations sanctions are reimposed under the “snapback” mechanism. Russia states that the E3's step to activate snapback is illegal.

What they're saying:

Speaking on Wednesday in New York during a meeting with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Pezeshkian said Western governments must demonstrate commitment to their obligations if dialogue is to have substance. He stressed that the current situation has emerged because the Western side has failed to honor its commitments.

“The Western countries must show adherence to their obligations for any understanding to carry real meaning,” Pezeshkian stated, cautioning that activating the snapback mechanism would end the purpose of dialogue altogether.

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi: "The action of the European Troika (the United Kingdom, France, and Germany) in seeking to activate the mechanism for the automatic reimposition of sanctions (snapback) will inflict irreparable damage upon Europe’s international standing and credibility."

What's next:

Based on the ongoing situation, the draft resolution is unlikely to win the vote, due to the U.S. veto.
