Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi delivered a pointed critique of U.S. unilateral policies, calling for synergy as an inevitable choice against unilateralism.

Why it matters:

Araghchi’s remark highlights Iran’s push for regional economic alliances through bodies like ECO, SCO, and BRICS as a counter to Western unilateralism, amid ongoing tensions including U.S.-Israeli aggression against Iran and regional states.

What they’re saying:

"Our region and the world over the past two years have witnessed major challenges, including unprecedented, blatant, and audacious violations of the most cherished human values, as well as international principles and the United Nations Charter, by the Zionist regime with the support of certain global powers. These actions have placed the achievements of the international community in the post-World War era at risk of destruction.

"Today, the world is facing unbridled unilateralism more than ever before. This worrying trend has made the international order more fragile, confronted stability and the preservation of peace and security in the region and the world with serious challenges, and limited and distorted opportunities for cooperation between countries.

"On the other hand, this situation has doubled the need to strengthen existing multilateral mechanisms and to create coalitions and organizations for multilateral cooperation. Cooperation and synergy among developing countries in multilateral frameworks is no longer a choice but a necessity."

Flashback:

Iran and the P5+1 countries (U.S., France, U.K., Germany, Russia, and China) reached a nuclear agreement known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2015. The agreement was supposed to lift nuclear-related sanctions on Iran in exchange for Iran's voluntary limitations on its nuclear program, but the U.S. failed to honor its commitments and unilaterally withdrew in May 2018.
