Romania and Poland issued emergency air alerts on the evening of September 13 after a Russian drone attack reportedly entered their airspace, raising tensions across NATO’s eastern flank.

What happened:

Romanian authorities warned residents in northern Tulcea County about potential falling debris from unmanned aircraft.

In Poland, an alert was issued around 7:15 PM local time in the eastern Lublin Voivodeship region.

The alerts were expected to last approximately 90 minutes.

Flashback:

Just days earlier, on September 10, around 20 Russian drones crossed into Polish airspace during a large-scale attack on Ukraine. Polish air defenses shot down only four drones.

What they're saying:

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte praised the Alliance’s response as “very successful,” saying it demonstrated NATO’s readiness to defend “every inch” of its territory. Following the incident, NATO invoked Article 4, triggering consultations among member states in the North Atlantic Council.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says, "What happened in Poland is regrettable and unacceptable, and we don't want it to happen again."

Why it matters:

The repeated drone incursions into NATO territory underscore growing risks of spillover from Russia’s war in Ukraine and test the Alliance’s air defense coordination.
