Why it matters:
The Persian Gulf islands of Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tunbs have historically been part of Iran, proof of which can be found and corroborated by countless historical, legal, and geographical documents in Iran and other parts of the world. However, the United Arab Emirates has repeatedly laid claim to the islands.
The big picture:
In its statement, Iran’s Foreign Ministry dismissed allegations of interference in Arab affairs, including claims of arms shipments to Yemen.
Tehran said the Israeli regime, backed by the United States, has been conducting genocide in the occupied Palestinian territories, aggression in Syria and Lebanon, and repeated terrorist attacks in Yemen.
Iran called on Arab states to avoid “divisive rhetoric” that distracts from the “main issue of the Islamic world”: Palestine.
What they’re saying:
Iran’s Foreign Ministry:
“We completely reject the false allegations and baseless accusations in the Arab League’s closing statement.”
“We draw the attention of member states to the need for Islamic and Arab unity against the hegemony and aggressions of the Zionist regime.”
“Iran reaffirms its absolute sovereignty over Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb as inseparable parts of its territory. Repetition of baseless claims will not alter the historical, legal, and geographic facts.”
“The accusations regarding weapons shipments to Yemen are unfounded. Such claims, mostly fabricated by the Zionist regime, will not serve the interests of the Islamic nation.”
