Beijing held one of its most elaborate military parades in Tianjin on Wednesday following the 25th SCO Summit, a move that seemingly challenge the U.S. military boasting in the region.

Why it matters:

Chinses President Xi Jinping ordered the great parade as he hosted Russian and Iranian counterparts among others.

  • The display not only marked a historic milestone but also served as a powerful message of China’s growing military capabilities and technological advancements to the U.S..

The big picture:

China commemorates the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the end of World War II. The event was held following the 25th Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), a summit of the independent countries.

What we're seeing:

Troops assembled along Chang’an Avenue following Xi’s observation, with the parade beginning with a display of various military formations. These included airborne flag guards, infantry units, war flag contingents, weapon columns, and aerial squadrons—all marching past or flying over Tiananmen Square.

A military surprise:

A highlight of the parade was the unveiling of China’s latest generation of unmanned combat drones capable of reconnaissance, assault, mine and bomb disposal, and tactical support.
