Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, highlighting China’s central role in advancing multilateralism, expressed hope that Beijing can provide a foundation for realizing shared global objectives and encouraging countries to adhere to the frameworks established at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit.

Why it matters:

Pezeshkian’s remarks signal Iran’s deepening alignment with China and broader multilateral blocs like SCO and BRICS, amid ongoing Western sanctions. By endorsing China’s Belt and Road Initiative and “global governance” vision, Iran positions itself as a vocal critic of U.S. unilateralism. The statement could reshape regional alliances and influence emerging economic and security frameworks across Asia and West Asia.

The big picture:

With growing ties to China and Russia, Tehran is embracing multipolarism as a counterweight to U.S. influence. The SCO and BRICS summits offer platforms for Iran to advocate for alternative trade systems, digital infrastructure, and regional security cooperation, potentially accelerating a shift in global power dynamics.

What he's saying:

Speaking to CCTV during his visit to China, Pezeshkian emphasized the need for nations to confront the unilateralist policies of the United States. “If we are to move away from unilateralism, we must seriously implement the frameworks signed at the SCO Summit,” he stated.

He stated that this approach involves promoting interaction and trade while opposing sanctions. He further emphasized the need to uphold justice, fairness, and the rule of law among nations to foster shared global development.

Referring to China’s leadership in this effort, Pezeshkian warned that failure to unite would allow the United States to continue pursuing totalitarian policy, through military aggression, coercion, and economic sanctions.

He highlighted key issues from the BRICS and SCO summits, emphasizing that implementing the agreed frameworks would streamline exchanges between countries.

“The Belt and Road Initiative represents a strategic vision from the Chinese president,” Pezeshkian said. “Through this path, we can share experiences and foster global development aligned with the slogans previously announced by China: Global Development, Global Peace, and Global Security.”

He concluded by stating that achieving security requires peaceful nations to stand against illegal, inhumane, and unjust actions. “If countries unite, they can realize the goals set forth by the Chinese president, now completed by the ‘global governance’ vision.”
