Chief of Staff of Iran's Armed Forces, Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi, warned that the U.S. military presence in the Caucasus undermines regional stability, meeting with Armenia's Security Council Secretary.

Why it matters:

The statement signals Iran's growing concern about Western influence in its northern neighborhood and reflects Tehran's efforts encourage the regional endogenous security.

What he is saying:

Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi: "The peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan will bring peace and security to the region, and the Islamic Republic of Iran has always welcomed these processes. The presence of foreign powers, including America, is a cause of concern for the Caucasus. Just as historical facts confirm the sovereignty of friendship and mutual goodwill between the two countries, they also confirm America's negative role in the region, and it is necessary to devise due mechanisms to reduce concerns."
