Iran's parliament is preparing a triple-urgency bill to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and its Additional Protocol, responding to European moves to trigger snap-back sanctions at the UN Security Council.

Why it matters:

The European Troika's snap-back reflects the complete collapse of diplomatic efforts to salvage the 2015 nuclear deal known as JCPOA, with Iran now moving toward maximum nuclear independence while Europe and the U.S. pursue maximum pressure through sanctions on Iran.

The big picture:

Iran's move to exit the NPT follows years of Western bad faith. While Iran fully complied with its JCPOA obligations, verified many times by IAEA reports until the U.S. unilaterally abandoned the deal in May 2018 and reimposed sanctions, the European parties (France, Germany, and the UK) failed to fulfill their commitments to lift sanctions and ensure Iran’s economic benefits. Despite Iran’s full adherence, the European troika now accuses Tehran of non-compliance and has triggered the snapback mechanism to restore UN sanctions.

What he's saying:

Haji-Deligani, MP: "The E3's letter shows bad faith and pressure against the Islamic Republic... During the 12-day war, these countries' behavior showed hostility toward Iran. The government must take decisive countermeasures."

Iran will immediately withdraw from the NPT and its Additional Protocol, cancel all commitments under this treaty, cease all negotiations with the U.S. and three European violators of JCPOA, and terminate all supervisory cooperation with the IAEA."
