In a tense phone call with European foreign ministers, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the E3's activation of the snapback mechanism as "illegal and unjustified," warning that Tehran will respond appropriately to protect its national interests.

Why it matters:
The confrontation threatens to completely collapse the 2015 nuclear deal and could trigger a new phase of nuclear reciptory measures by Iran, while further dividing world powers over how to handle Tehran's nuclear program.

The big picture:

The “snapback” mechanism in the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) allows any participant to reimpose UN sanctions if Iran is deemed in breach.

Tehran says the E3 failed to follow the JCPOA’s dispute resolution process and that their actions undermine diplomacy at a time when Iran’s nuclear facilities were recently damaged in the Israeli-American attacks.

Russia and China have echoed Iran’s position, warning against "a misuse of the Security Council’s authority."

What Araghchi is saying:
The Islamic Republic of Iran will respond appropriately to this illegal and unjustified action by the three European countries to preserve and secure its national rights and interests. The action of the three European countries in this regard is unjustified, illegal, and lacks any legal basis. Iran hopes the three European countries will correct this wrong move in the coming days by adopting a responsible approach and understanding existing realities.

Key points:

  • European ministers notified Iran of the formal snapback process initiation at the UNSC
  • E3 emphasized a 30-day window for a diplomatic solution before sanctions return
  • Araghchi cited Iran's "responsible performance and good faith" in nuclear diplomacy
  • Iran says it has legal high ground under NPT and international law
