Why it matters:
The ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, marked by relentless airstrikes and a starvation blockade, has drawn global outrage. Iran is stepping up its diplomatic messaging, urging Islamic countries to move beyond statements and act with coordinated pressure to end the bloodshed.
The big picture:
Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians, with widespread destruction and civilian casualties mounting daily. Islamic nations, though largely united in condemnation, remain divided in coordinated diplomatic or punitive actions.
What they're saying:
President Masoud Pezeshkian in a phone call with Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim:
“The atrocities committed by the Zionist regime in Gaza are unacceptable to any free-thinking human being. Islamic countries must stop these crimes through active diplomacy, unity, and responsibility.”
Pezeshkian emphasized Iran's long-standing support for Palestine, calling on other Islamic countries to adopt stronger, more proactive stances.
He noted that Israel’s 12-day military assault on Iran in June was partly a consequence of Tehran’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause.
“Our only sin is that we stand with the oppressed. The arrogant powers see this as a crime and pressure us for it.”
Pezeshkian called for unified diplomatic action by Islamic countries and increased pressure on international forums to end the Gaza genocide.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim condemned Israel’s crimes in Gaza as “genocidal”.
Ibrahim said Malaysia has issued strong statements and launched extensive diplomatic efforts to stop the bloodshed
Anwar Ibrahim called for greater Islamic solidarity and reaffirmed that his country’s commitment to deepening ties with Iran
“The Malaysian government and people deeply respect the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
State of play:
The phone call underscores Iran’s intent to spearhead a diplomatic coalition among Islamic nations in support of Gaza.
Pezeshkian extended an invitation to Anwar Ibrahim to visit Tehran, which the Malaysian PM accepted.
