Why it matters:
The full alignment of Western powers behind Israel, even amid global outrage over the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, underscores deep divisions within the international community. The rejection of genocide claims and continued support for military action come as civilian deaths mount and UN agencies report famine conditions.
The big picture:
The session came amid increasing international condemnation of Israel’s siege of Gaza, where over 60,000 Palestinians have been killed according to local health authorities. Despite this, major Western powers continue to frame the crisis through a counterterrorism lens, prioritizing the dismantling of Hamas over ceasefire efforts.
What they’re saying:
Dorothy Shea, U.S. Deputy Ambassador to the UN:
“The United States has made it clear that the release of hostages, the disarmament of Hamas, and ensuring it does not govern Gaza are our priorities.”
She quoted President Trump, stating:
“As President Trump said last week, the fastest way to end the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is for Hamas to surrender and release the hostages.”
Shea also rejected UN reports accusing Israel of using starvation as a weapon:
“We have again seen allegations of genocide. These claims are politically motivated and absolutely false.”
She reaffirmed Washington’s position:
“The United States fully supports Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas terrorism.”
Barbara Woodward, U.K. Ambassador to the UN:
“Hamas and its ideology must have no role in the future governance of Gaza. It must never again be allowed to threaten Israel’s security.”
She called on Israel to ease humanitarian restrictions:
“All land crossings must be opened to allow immediate delivery of essential supplies, food, baby formula, medicine, fuel, and drinking water, based on humanitarian principles of neutrality, independence, and impartiality.
France’s Representative to the UN:
While condemning Hamas and demanding the immediate release of Israeli hostages, the French envoy also stated:
“Recognition of the State of Palestine will pave the way for peace in the Middle East and help realize the two-state solution.”
State of play:
The Security Council meeting, initiated by Israel, focused on the situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. While non-Western members criticized Israel’s conduct in Gaza, the U.S. and its allies reiterated their support for Israel’s military campaign.
