Why it matters:
Israel’s recent attack on Syria, carried out under the pretext of supporting the Druze community, has sparked global concern. The strike comes as the U.S. government reiterates its support for the ruling authorities in Damascus.
The big picture:
A ceasefire was declared between Syria and Israel on Saturday after Israeli forces targeted multiple locations inside Syria. According to the U.S. envoy, however, the ceasefire applies only to the Sweida region.
What he’s saying:
U.S. envoy Tom Barrack: "Israel’s intervention in Syria, which came under difficult circumstances, has introduced a new and highly complex chapter."
He stressed that the U.S. government was not responsible for actions Israel considers acts of self-defense, and we had no role in its recent operations inside Syria.
Barrack daid he believed that all minority groups in Syria were wise enough to support unity within a centralized framework.
U.S. envoy claimed that Washington considered the Syrian government capable, competent, and trustworthy—fulfilling its commitments without error.
