Tehran (IP) - Iranian Foreign Minister met with his Syrian counterpart in Tehran on Monday and two sides called for expansion of mutual ties.

Iran Press/Iran News: During the meeting, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Syrian Counterpart Faisal Mekdad discussed various bilateral, regional, and international issues, as well as the joint fight against terrorism.

Referring to the broad and strategic relations, the two sides emphasized their will to expand and strengthen relations and exchanged views on the development of bilateral and multilateral economic relations.

In this meeting, the Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed his satisfaction with the continuation of the political process in Syria, stressing the support of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Astana process, and assessed the recent meeting of the refugees as positive.

Explaining the conditions and developments in the region, Zarif stressed more vigilance and consensus among Iran, Syria, and other countries.

The Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad, for his part, conveyed the condolences of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the Syrian nation to the Iranian government and people due to the martyrdom of the top Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh and IRGC's Quds Force Commander Lt Gen Qassem Soleimani and wished great mercy to the two martyrs.

Expressing gratitude and appreciation for the Islamic Republic of Iran's continued support to Syria in the fight against terrorism and extremism, the Syrian foreign minister also referred to the abnormal measures taken by the US in the region that have led to escalating tensions and assessed it in the framework of preferring the interests of the Zionist regime over the interests of the United States in the region.

Faisal Mekdad reiterated the Syrian government's determination to continue the fight against terrorism, calling the cooperation between the two countries important in this regard, and considered it a key step towards the return of peace to Syria.
