Why it matters:
This is one of the deadliest natural disasters in recent years in the southern United States. The disappearance of numerous children from a summer camp is actually a humanitarian crisis in the city.
The Big Picture:
Flash floods are relatively common in Texas, especially during heavy rainstorms or hurricanes, because some areas have dry, hard soil that doesn’t absorb water quickly.
Central and South Texas, including Kerr County, can see sudden floods from intense thunderstorms, especially in narrow river valleys like the Guadalupe River basin.
However, floods in Texas can be as deadly and severe as this recent one and are usually linked to extreme weather events like tropical storms or unusually heavy rain.
State of play:
Rescue operations are ongoing.
