Why it matters:
The move marks a rare and significant rebuke by Western governments against key figures in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet. However, these countries still continue to support the Israeli regime despite its egregious human rights violations.
The big picture:
Smotrich and Ben-Gvir have played leading roles in fueling settler violence in the occupied West Bank and promoting hate speech since the start of the Israeli genocide in Gaza on October 7, 2023.
The sanctions reflect growing international alarm over the Israeli regime’s domestic policies and the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.
According to the Financial Times, the move may also reflect a “major shift” in the UK Labour Party’s stance toward the Netanyahu government.
What they’re saying:
In a joint statement, the four countries announced:
“Settler violence in the West Bank violates the rights of Palestinians.”
“We express deep concern over the severe suffering of civilians in Gaza.”
UK Foreign Secretary said that his country, along with three other countries, is taking action to penalize Ben-Gvir and Smotrich for their incitement to extremist violence against Palestinians.
Their actions have contributed to widespread human rights abuses, he added.
Norwegian Prime Minister said the Israeli regime's policies toward Palestinians are not contributing to peace or security.
