The United States and some Western countries prevent Syrian refugees’ return to their country, the Syrian president said.

Iran Press/Middle East: Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said at an international summit on the return of Syrian refugees in Damascus on Wednesday that some Western countries were using the refugees for political purposes.

Bashar al-Assad said that the Syrian government is trying to return all the Syrian refugees, but there are several obstacles in the way, adding that Western countries are preventing the return of refugees through intimidation and bribery.

The Syrian president noted that the vast majority of Syrians abroad want to return to their homeland and praised the countries that welcomed the Syrian refugees, as well as the assistance of Iran and Russia in easing the war and the siege of Syria, and their efforts to hold an international summit on the return of the Syrian refugees in Damascus.

Today, Damascus hosts an international conference on Syrian refugees with representatives from China, Russia, Iran, Lebanon, the UAE, Pakistan, and Oman.

The two-day conference will address issues related to facilitating the return of Syrian refugees in the wake of the coronavirus epidemic and the issue of harsh US sanctions against Damascus.
