Iran Press/ Africa: According to the statement of Borno State governor, Baba Gana Umar Zulum who spoke on Wednesday morning, the government is yet to ascertain the extent of the damage, but over 1 million people were affected.
He said that the situation was compounded by climate change that caused heavy downpours to be experienced this season, and the flood overwhelmed Alau Dam, located in the Konduga Local Government Area of the state, which overflowed into the city and the water volume released from another dam in the Republic of Cameroon.
In a press statement by Zubaida Umar, head of Borno State Emergency Management, 37 dead bodies have been found on Wednesday. Footages taken by Iran Press show thousands of houses have been destroyed while people were struggling to evacuate some of their properties. IBinta Modu, a grandmother whose two grandchildren were missing told Iran Press that apart from her unseen grandchildren, they lost everything.
"The water destroyed our farms, houses, and everything. There is nothing left to us. The state governor has assisted us. We were evacuated to this place. I swear by Allah, our maize, our cowpea, our corn, all our crops at the farm have been destroyed, so also our home. What are we going to do now?" There is nothing we can do. We are begging the governor to allow Non-governmental organizations to come to help us."
Another elderly person, Yusuf Kaka, who also spoke to Iran Press in an exclusive interview said life was already not easy before the flood occurred. "We buy one piece of noodles at one thousand and five hundred Naira. Now, Allah is giving us trial through the flood. This is a will of God. We pray for Allah's assistance."Rescue teams of Borno State Emergency Management and other volunteers continue working to save lives despite a lack of a good telecommunication network and enough equipment.
