Iranian diplomat calls returning sanctions against Iran violation of UNSC resolution

Head of the Interests Section of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Cairo, Nasser Kanani, has said that any US action to restore sanctions against Iran violates Security Council Resolution 2231.

Iran PressAfrica: Nasser Kanani said on Sunday that the United States had not complied with its obligations under the international agreement and had withdrawn from it, so it could not claim to have authority in the agreement.

The Head of the Interests Section of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Cairo stressed: "Despite adhering to the JCPOA and Security Council Resolution 2231, the Islamic Republic of Iran has not been able to reap the economic benefits of the JCPOA due to US pressure."

The diplomat stated: "US illegal efforts to activate the snapback mechanism will undoubtedly severely damage the credibility of the Security Council and all countries are expected to oppose US unilateral actions in the international arena."

In early August, the United States once again accused Iran of violating the nuclear deal and announced plans to restore UN sanctions on Tehran. On August 20, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo notified the United Nations that Washington was initiating the process to reinstate all UN sanctions on Iran. The US believes that the sanctions may come back into effect in 30 days.

Under the JCPOA, the state parties - Russia, the US, the UK, China, France, and Germany - can trigger a snapback mechanism to reimpose sanctions on Iran if Tehran violates the deal. Washington left the JCPOA in 2018.

Washington’s move came shortly after a US draft resolution on extending the arms embargo on Iran failed to get the required number of votes to be adopted by the UN Security Council.

According to US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, his country was ready to impose sanctions on Russia and Tehran if the US effort to restore anti-Iranian restrictions is hampered. 104/207
