Putin, Macron confer on situation in Lebanon

The Elysee Palace announced that via a telephone conversation, the presidents of Russia and France discussed the situation in Lebanon.

Iran Press/Europe: During a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, French President Emmanuel Macron invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to join the effort to raise money for Lebanon.

"In his conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Macron also said that the five permanent members of the UN Security Council should support the formation of a new government in Lebanon," the Elysee Palace office said in a statement on Wednesday.

On August 4, a massive explosion took place in a nearby warehouse in the port of Beirut, containing 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate, following a massive fire in a warehouse that stored flammable stuff.

According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, 171 people have been killed and about 6,000 injured in the blast so far.

The Beirut explosion, however, had a strong political dimension to the point that street protests led to the resignation of Lebanese PM Hassan Diab's cabinet.
