Iranian Police seizes two tons of narcotics in Sistan and Baluchestan

Sistan and Baluchestan (IP) - The police chief of Sistan and Baluchestan province Mohammad Ghanbari announced on Saturday that the police and security forces identified and destroyed a drug trafficking gang during an operation.

Iran Press/Iran News: Ghanbari said that 2 tons and 246 kilograms of drugs and some ammunition were confiscated in the operation.

Brigadier General Abbas Ali Behdanifard, the police commander of Yazd province in central Iran, also said, "In the last four months, 13 tons and 333 kilograms of narcotics have been confiscated in Yazd province."

So far, 3,000 Iranian police have been killed in the fight against drug trafficking. That's why the United Nations has named Iran as the pioneer of the fight against drugs.

5 Iranian provinces, including Sistan and Baluchestan, South Khorasan, Kerman, Bushehr, and Hormozgan share 55 percent of weekly drug confiscation.

Iran has been actively fighting drug trades originating from Afghanistan in the past four decades, despite its high economic and human costs.

The Iranian police officials maintain that drug production in Afghanistan has undergone a 40-fold increase since the US-led invasion of the country in 2001.

Afghan and western officials blame Washington and NATO for the change, saying that allies have "overlooked" the drug problem since invading the country more than 16 years ago.

The country has spent more than hundreds of millions of dollars on sealing its borders and preventing the transit of narcotics destined for European, Arab, and Central Asian countries.

According to reports, in 2018 alone, Iranian forces carried out 1,557 operations against drug traffickers, seizing approximately 807 tons of different types of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

According to the World Drug Report 2019 of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, in 2017, Iran had seized the largest quantity of opiates, accounting for 39% of the global total.
