Iranian Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Majid Takht-Ravanchi

Iran's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Majid Takht-Ravanchi said that the US efforts to extend Iran's arms embargo is in violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

Iran Press/America: The New York Times revealed a US ploy to pressure the United Nations Security Council to extend an arms embargo on Tehran, which is due to expire in October.

According to the report, Mike Pompeo has approved a plan, under which the United States would claim it legally remains a "participant state" in Iran's Nuclear Deal that Donald Trump has unilaterally withdrawn.

Describing the US claim as an unacceptable and unprecedented joke, Takht-Ravanchi emphasized that the US has violated both Resolution 2231 and its obligations under Iran's Nuclear Deal by withdrawing from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Iran UN Envoy stressed: "The members of the UN Security Council must note that any move to counter Iran's arms embargo is contrary to the Council Resolution 2231."

The Iranian official also referred to the US military presence and its movements in the West Asian region, urging the Americans to leave the region sooner.

"The security of the West Asian region must be ensured by regional countries," he added.

The United Nations Security Council arms embargo on Iran in 2006 and 2007 is supposed to be lifted on 18 October 2020, five years after the JCPOA  Adoption Day.
