Libya: Haftar militias strike University of Tripoli

Libyan Government Forces said that militias affiliated with Khalifa Haftar had struck the University of Tripoli.

Iran Press/Africa: “In a new and dangerous violation of the ceasefire, an arbitrary projectile landed near the faculties of agriculture and pharmacy in the University of Tripoli,” a statement issued by the media center of “Operation Volcano of Rage,” said, as Anadolu reported.

According to Anadolu news agency, no damage was reported as a result of the attack as the projectile did not explode and the bomb squad defused it.

On Friday 31 January, UN Envoy to Libya Ghassan Salama told the United Nations Security Council that the ceasefire deal in Libya is only ink on paper, counting more than 110 breaches of the deal which was announced on 12 January.

The Haftar-led LNA, supported for years by Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE, and a number of Western countries, controls eastern Libya and has in recent months advanced toward the northern part of the country.

On 4 April 2018, Haftar launched a military campaign to occupy Tripoli and oust the Libyan government. Haftar’s attack coincided with UN plans to hold a national dialogue conference in Libya, which was undermined by Haftar’s campaign.

Libya has been engaged in civil war since 2011, when former dictator, Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown.
