Tehran (IP) - The spokesman for the Guardian Council, Abbasali Kadkhodaie, has said if election laws are observed and heeded, then healthy and enthusiastic elections are sure to follow.

Iran Press/Iran news: In a press conference on Saturday, Abbasali Kadkhodaie responded to a question by IP correspondent about what are the responsibilities of the Guardian Council to ensure good, free, and fair elections are held with the maximum turnout by the voters.

Kadkhodaie said, "Economic factors which have a significant impact on the people's livelihood will certainly play a part and have a substantial bearing on the election, and we will hopefully see a high turnout by the electorate."

Commenting further Khadkhodaie underlined that the Guardian Council is an executive body that oversees the election, but the turnout of voters and participation by the electorate is not related to the Guardian Council, and the reasons for a high or low turnout must be searched for elsewhere.

He added that the Guardian council starts the second phase of its work as of Saturday and those disqualified candidates who want the reason for their disqualification, or to follow up various matters, or lodge a complaint, can do so within the ten-day period allowed by the law.

Emphasizing that the Guardian Council will do its legal responsibility, Kadkhodaie said up to now over 50% of candidates have been vetted and approved by the Guardian Council and about 20% have been disqualified from contesting the election. 101/207/211
