The permanent representative of China to the United Nations (UN) said the US had violated all international standards by assassinating Lieutenant General Qasem Soleimani in Iraq.

Iran Press/America: In an interview with reporters on China Central TV on Sunday, Zhang Jun stressed that violent, adventurous and unilateral US behavior and actions had violated international norms and international standards.

He added China intends to play an active role to prevent escalating tensions, providing stability in the Middle East and Persian Gulf region, and to play a constructive role in this regard.

The Chinese official reiterated that China, as a permanent member of the Security Council, is keeping a close eye on all the developments and is making use of diplomatic efforts to prevent the situation from getting out of control.

China's permanent representative to the UN added that the Chinese Foreign Minister held talks with the Foreign Ministers of Iran, Russia, and France in this regard and emphasized that China opposes the use of force and violence in international relations.

The Chinese official noted that Iraq's sovereignty should be respected and the US should refrain from using force and seek dialogue to resolve international disputes.

Zhang Jun said the Security Council is the first and foremost responsible for protecting international peace and security, and the council members should work to reduce tensions.

China's permanent representative to the UN described the US military action to assassinate Lieutenant General Qasem Soleimani and his companions as a worrying development in the region and said the Security Council had the responsibility to take this issue seriously and to reduce tensions.
