EU Diplomacy Chief Josep Borrell

The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell reacted to allegations that a crashed Ukrainian passenger airliner was shut down in Iran saying any speculation void of evidence was irresponsible.

Iran Press/Europe: Speaking after an extraordinary meeting with EU foreign minister in Brussels on Friday afternoon, Borrell said he was informed of statements of certain political leaders in this regard.

But he added that passing comments on such a sensitive issue without solid information was sheer speculation and irresponsible.

The Boeing 737-800 plane belonging to Ukraine International Airlines crashed near Tehran minutes after the take-off from Imam Khomeini Airport on Wednesday when its engine caught fire. All the 167 passengers and 9 crew members were killed in the crash.

Also referring to the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran he said, "We want to save this deal if it's possible."

Borrell added that Friday's meeting did not discuss triggering the deal's dispute resolution mechanism, and urged Iran to resume its obligations under the deal.

Iran has incrementally scaled back from its commitments after the US unilaterally withdrew from the deal and re-imposed its sanction which Iran slammed as economic terrorism.
