Iraqi PMF deploy forces near Iranian border

Iraqi sources announced the massive deployment of Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in Diyala province, eastern Iraq, near Iran's border, to counter ISIS terrorists.

Iran Press/Middle East: Local officials in Diyala province said on Saturday the move came after ISIS terrorists attacked an important oil-rich area east of the province on the Iraqi-Iranian border.

Two members of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) (also known as Hashd al-Sha'abi) were killed and five others wounded in an ISIS terrorist attack on the city of Diyala in eastern Iraq on Sunday.

The area, which includes the well-known Naftkhaneh oil wells, is located about 110 kilometers northeast of Baqubah, near the Iraq-Iran border, witnessed the widespread deployment of the Popular Mobilization Forces especially on the main road which is controlled by its units.

It is the biggest deployment of PMF in the region since 2003 to counter ISIS's danger.

These units are currently in control of the area and have used an open operations strategy to chase active terrorist cells in the area.

The geographical situation of the Petroleum Region is very complicated, containing impassable ridges.

In June 2014, the ISIS terror group seized large swathes of Iraqi territory in a rapid attack on the northern Iraqi city of Mosul and surrounding provinces, but finally, in December 2017, Iraqi forces liberated virtually all the territories formerly held by the terrorists.
