UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that the US unilateral sanctions against Iran go contrary to the objectives of the Security Council Resolution 2231 which endorses the 2015 multilateral nuclear agreement with Tehran.

Iran Press/Iran news:: The resolution stipulates that all countries are entitled to have free trade with Iran, read his eighth biannual report on the implementation of the inspection process and schedule the removal of United Nations sanctions against Iran which was released on Wednesday.

Gueterres said the nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is one of the most important achievements of multilateral diplomacy which enjoys wide support of the global community and the United Nations member states, according to the UN website.

Last year, the republican US President Donald Trump announced the unilateral exit of his government from the nuclear agreement with Iran reached by the democratic government of President Barack Obama.

On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that Washington will continue its maximum pressure policy through the adoption of further economic sanctions, according to media reports, following imposing new sanctions on Iran's civilian airline and shipping network.

In response to re-imposition of US nuclear sanctions and Europe's failure to provide Iran with advantages under the agreement, Tehran started incremental scale-back from the deal in 2019 by starting uranium enrichment in its peaceful nuclear program which it had halted under the deal.
