September 18 has been named the 'National Day of Persian Poetry and Literature' in Iran which coincide with the death anniversary of the legendary Iranian poet Shahriar.

Iran Press/Iran news: In the 'National Day of Persian Poetry and Literature' which is also Shahriar National Day, poets and authors across the country commemorate poet Hossein Behjat Tabrizi (1906-1988), known as Shahriar, on his death anniversary.

He was the first Iranian to write significant poetry in the Azerbaijani language. He published his first book of poems in 1929, with prefaces by Mohammad Taqi Bahar, Saeed Nafisi, and Pejman Bakhtiari.

The poet's most famous works are 'Heidar Baba', a poem dedicated to his birthplace, the village of Heidar Baba, and 'The Blessed Bird of Good Omen', which is about Imam Ali (PBUH), the first Shia Imam.

His poems are mainly influenced by the well-known Iranian poet Hafez. His most famous Azari language poem 'Heidar-Baba' has so far been translated into 90 languages.

Shahriar (1906-1988) has seen the three eras of Qajars, Pahlavi, and the Islamic Republic. A more profound look into his poetry reveals his objection to injustice and narrow-mindedness.

He was a gigantic figure indeed who supported his people at critical times such as the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war when he boosted the morale of Iranian soldiers through his poems.

Shahriar was born in 1906 in Tabriz and died on September 18, 1988, in one of Tehran's hospitals and his body was transferred to Tabriz and was buried in 'Maqbarat-o Shoara' (House of Poets).

His poems are mainly influenced by Hafez. 'The Blessing Bird of Good Omen', which is about Imam Ali (AS), is his other noteworthy credit.101/205
