Trump cancels secret meeting with Taliban leaders

US President claimed on Saturday evening that he cancelled a secret meeting scheduled to take place with Taliban leaders at Camp David on Sunday.

Iran Press/America: In a series of three tweets on Saturday, Donald Trump announced the decision after learning that the Taliban had killed a Romanian soldier serving with the Nato-led mission and 11 others in a car bombing in Kabul on Thursday to gain leverage in the talks.

“What kind of people would kill so many in order to seemingly strengthen their bargaining position? They didn’t, they only made it worse,” the president’s tweets explained. If the Taliban could not maintain a ceasefire and be willing to kill innocent civilians during negotiations, Trump added, “then they probably don’t have the power to negotiate a meaningful agreement anyway.”

While earlier the ex-president of Afghanistan Hamed Karzai had said the 17-years presence of US military forces in Afghanistan has just brought insecurity to the country, Trump concludes his series of tweets by asking “How many more decades are they willing to fight?”

It is unclear if the US-Taliban talks are permanently over or only paused.

Afghanistan has become the longest war the US has ever fought. There are about 14,000 US troops still deployed in the country.
