Zahedan (IP) - After recent heavy rainfalls in Sistan and Balouchestan province, a huge amount of water has flowed into Hamun lake, making the locals very happy.

Iran Press/Iran news: Already registered as a world heritage site, Iran's eastern Lake Hamun was designated a world biosphere reserve in the UNESCO’s Fourth World Congress of Biosphere Reserves last month.

Moreover, the recent heavy downpours in both Iran and Afghanistan have given a new lease of life to the struggling Hamun lake, with its water level rising significantly compared to just a few months ago, Iran Press reported.

Hamun lake is fed by numerous seasonal tributaries; the main tributary is the perennial Helmand River, which originates in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush mountains.

Hamun lake is the third largest lake in Iran after the Caspian Sea and lake Urmia, the seventh international wetland and one of the biosphere reserves in Iran.

The lake and wetland of Hamun are located in the province of Sistan and Balouchestan. The lake consists of three small lakes called Hamun Pozek, Hamun Sabouri and Hamun Helmand, which join together when water is abundant and form a common lake between Afghanistan and Iran. 101/211/105
