Iran Press/West Asia: During these discussions, several cooperation agreements are expected to be signed, covering areas such as tax cooperation, agriculture, natural resources, communication, social support, sports and youth, education, tourism, cultural and artistic exchanges, cooperation on historical monuments, and the strengthening of skilled labor forces, as well as collaboration between chambers of commerce.
Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, noted in a conversation with reporters that 15 memorandums of understanding will be signed between Iran and Iraq. He added that President Ebrahim Raisi was originally scheduled to make this trip, but unfortunately, it could not proceed due to a plane crash.
The meetings highlight the growing importance of Iran-Iraq relations, particularly in the context of ongoing regional tensions and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. As both nations seek to enhance their partnership, the discussions aim to address mutual interests and foster cooperation across various sectors.
Pezeshkian was officially welcomed by Iraqi PM
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has been officially welcomed by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani in the neighboring country’s capital.
The welcoming ceremony was held on Wednesday morning upon the arrival of President Pezeshkian at the Baghdad International Airport.
After the ceremony, President Pezeshkian will meet with his Iraqi counterpart Abdullatif Rashid at the presidential palace.
Then, Pezeshkian will hold talks with the Iraqi prime minister, and the two sides’ delegates will start meeting.
President Pezeshkian’s trip to Baghdad is his first foreign visit since he took office as the new Iranian president in August.
Tribute to commanders of resistance
Upon his arrival at Baghdad Airport, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian paid tribute to Lieutenant General Qasem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis at the place of their martyrdom.
General Soleimani and senior Iraqi commander al-Muhandis, both top anti-terror icons in the region, were assassinated in a terror attack by the US army near Baghdad on January 3, 2020, at the direct order of the then US President Donald Trump.
Heading a high-ranking eco-political delegation, Pezeshkian has arrived in the Iraqi capital on his first foreign visit after taking office in August.
Upon arrival in Baghdad on Wednesday, President Pezeshkian was welcomed by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani and Iran’s ambassador to the neighboring country Mohammad Kazem Al-e Sadeq.
Meeting with his Iraqi counterpart and other top officials in the host country, signing several documents on cooperation, and holding meetings with Iranian businesspersons residing in Iraq are among the president’s schedule.
After his formal meetings, Pezeshkian plans to visit the holy shrines of Imam Ali, the first Imam of Shia Muslims, in Najaf; and Imam Hussain, the third Imam, in Karbala.
Also, the president will tour some of the Iranian-run projects in Basra, southern Iraq; then he will leave for Iraqi Kurdistan region in the north of the neighboring state.
