Hook: Continuing efforts to extend Iran arms embargo

US Representative for Iran Affairs said that Washington is trying to persuade all members of the UN Security Council to vote for extending the arms embargo on Iran, which is scheduled to expire in October.

Iran PressAmerica: Repeating accusations against Iran, Brian Hook said the White House has a plan and tries to attract the votes of permanent and non-permanent members of the UN Security Council.

Speaking to Asharq Al-Awsat, the US Representative for Iran Affairs said the arms embargo should be extended.

This is while according to the Iran Nuclear Deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which is binding due to being endorsed by UN Resolution 2231, the sanctions should be lifted in October.

Hook also alleged that without the embargo in place, Iran’s danger will be increased in the region as more arms would be exported to Yemen, Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon.

The US official said he is scheduled to meet with officials of Western and Arab countries to follow up on the issue.

As Iran's arms embargo date approaching to its end in October, the United States, despite withdrawing from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), is still trying to come up with new plan to show it can be still influential in the implementation of JCPOA and the UN Security Council resolution 2231.

Russia, China, and the European Union, meanwhile, have insisted that the US withdrew from the JCPOA and is no longer a party to the agreement, thus has no right to use the terms of the agreement or Resolution 2231.

Recently, Russia's Permanent Representative to the international organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov condemned the US efforts to extend arms embargoes on Iran while also selling arms to countries in the West Asian region.
