US administration has launched a "maximum pressure campaign" targeting Iran, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Sunday in a rhetorical assault on Iran.

Speaking at the Reagan Presidential Library in California Pompeo said, the Trump administration will pursue a "diplomatic and economic pressure campaign" that will support what he called the "shoots of liberty" growing through the Iran's rocky soil.

Ten minutes into his speech, he was heckled by a protester, who shouted about the Trump administration "kidnapping children," reference to US President Donald Trump's immigration policies that have led to children being separated by their family at the border.

US Secretary of State went on to say the United States will work with countries that import Iranian oil “to get imports as close to zero as possible” by Nov. 4

Pompeo along with US national security adviser, John Bolton has been a vocal critic of the Iran and the internationally negotiated Iran nuclear deal of 2015 and advocated immediate regime change.

Several members of the Trump administration and Trump’s circle have been outspoken hawks on Iran. Before joining the White House, Bolton called for the overthrow of the Iranian government. Rudolph W. Giuliani, Trump’s personal attorney, has given paid speeches to the terrorist outfit called the Mujahedin-e-Khalq Organization (MEK), a controversial dissident group that the State Department listed as a terrorist group until 2012. On Sunday, Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, retweeted a three-day-old posting from the official account of the MEK.

The Trump administration backed out of that deal in May and is now expected to re-enact many of the punishing sanctions that were in place before the 2015 agreement was reached, including limiting Iran's ability to sell oil.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has warned that the deal could fall apart and hinted that Iran could restart its nuclear efforts if the US were to re-enact sanctions, though the European signatories of the accord have pledged to honor it.

Speaking to diplomats Sunday in Tehran, Rouhani said that the United States "must understand that war with Iran is the mother of all wars and peace with Iran is the mother of all peace.

"Do not play with the lion's tail, because you will regret it eternally," Rouhani said.
