Iran Press/ Iran News: Issuing a statement, Chief Justice of Iraq Faiq al-Zidan said the Supreme Judicial Council held a meeting with National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji, chief of National Security Agency Abdul Ghani al-Asadi, and head of Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service Brigadier General Abdel-Wahab al-Saedi to examine the litigations of the last year's social protests incidents, as well as the killed and wounded protesters and security forces.
He said the relevant entities have issued several arrest warrants against a number of employees of the Iraqi Ministries of Defense and Interior, which yet needs the confirmation of the country's Commander of Armed Forces (Prime Minister) and Minister of Interior.
The head of the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council explained that the Judicial Investigation Court in al-Rusafa, Baghdad, summoned the former government's defense and interior ministers to ask them for information on the case.
He stated that a number of officers would be arrested in these cases until the investigation.
The government of Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kazemi announced for the first time on August 29 the official death toll in the five-month riots last year (October to February 2109-2020) known as the October protests.
Hisham Dawood, the military adviser to the Iraqi prime minister, told at a news conference that 560 protesters and security forces were killed in the protests.
The violence against the protesters led to a political and social crisis among the youth and society, and eventually to the resignation of the former government, he added.
Street protests began in Iraq on October 1, 2019, and continued until the end of February.
These developments centered on protests against corruption, poverty, unemployment, and economic problems in Baghdad, as well as other southern and central provinces.
