Tehran (IP) - The WHO representative in Iran says the United Nations body has been helping Iran provide COVID vaccines while the severe US sanctions against the Iranian nation have hampered Tehran's efforts to fight against the global pandemic.

Iran PressIran News: Although Iran has been facing challenges in purchasing vaccines due to US sanctions, Syed Jaffar Hussain (Pakistan), WHO Representative and Head of Mission in the Islamic Republic of Iran, told Iran Press in an exclusive interview on Monday that "there are mechanisms using the UNICEF and WHO platforms and also some member states that support the Islamic Republic of Iran and Tehran was able to deposit all the money needed for the 16.8 million doses it purchased from COVAX."

"So under the humanitarian law and humanitarian principles, the Islamic Republic of Iran has the flexibility, obviously not as flexible as other countries, but still it allows them to bring enough vaccines into the country," he added on the sidelines of a ceremony of the Italian Embassy in Tehran on Italy's efforts in contribution to Iran in the global fight against the COVID-19.

The ceremony of the Italian Embassy in Tehran on Italy's efforts in contribution to Iran in the global fight against the COVID-19 was held in the presence of the Iranian officials from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Iran's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, representatives of the United Nations in Iran, and prominent Italian virologists, and university professors.
