Iran Press/ America: Eight Republican senators joined all Democrats in a 55-45 vote to pass a war powers resolution that says Trump must win approval from Congress before engaging in further military action against Iran.
The eight Republicans who broke with Trump were Sens. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine, Mike Lee of Utah, Rand Paul of Kentucky, Jerry Moran of Kansas, Todd Young of Indiana and Bill Cassidy of Louisiana.
The measure was authored by Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., who said the resolution was not about Trump or even the presidency, but instead was an important reassertion of congressional power to declare war.
While Trump is almost certain to veto the measure, Kaine argued that it could still send a message to the president and potentially influence future decisions on such actions that might bring the country to the brink of war.
Trump’s decision to order a drone strike against top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani at Iraq’s Baghdad airport last month ratcheted up tensions in the region and threatened to pull the U.S. into another bloody war in the Middle East. Iran initially responded with missile strikes on military bases that house US troops in Iraq, but the commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said that if the Zionist Regime of Israel and the United States committ any wrongdoing, the Revolutionary Guards will strike them both.
He made the remarks Thursday night during a speech at the commemoration ceremony of Lieutenant General Qasem Soleimani and his comrades in Tehran, in response to the statements by a Zionist official about attacks on Iranians in Syria and Iraq.
Salami pointed to Iran's missile attack in retaliation for the US assassination of Gen. Soleimani, the late commander of the Quds Force of the IRGC, adding that the United States suffered a slap in the face, but the major blow continues until the last American trooper leaves the Islamic lands.
