At the Tehran Dialogue Forum, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf asserted that the U.S.-dominated world order is shifting, arguing that no single nation can maintain perpetual dominance.

Why it matters:

Qalibaf's remarks reflect a growing sentiment among various nations that the era of U.S. global dominance is waning. This perspective could influence geopolitical strategies and alliances, particularly in the context of rising powers like China and ongoing conflicts such as the war in Ukraine.

The big picture:

Throughout history, international politics have seen various hegemonic powers rise and fall. Qalibaf's assertion that the U.S. has lost its dominant position suggests a significant shift in global power dynamics, with potential implications for international relations and economic policies.

What he's saying:

Qalibaf stated, "No country's hegemony has been or will be sustainable."

He pointed out that the U.S. has lost its ability to fully leverage its political, economic, and commercial power as it did in the late 20th century.

The parliament speaker also highlighted NATO's expansion as a contributing factor to the Ukraine conflict, asserting, "The continuous provocation of Russia by the West through Ukraine regarding NATO membership ultimately led to Russia's attack on Ukraine."

The Iranian Speaker noted the strategic competition between the U.S. and China, emphasizing that "the emergence of China as a leading economic power coincides with America's efforts to maintain its position in the global order."

He added: "The strategy of the Islamic Republic of Iran is a symbol of ideological opposition to the existence of the Israeli regime and support for the Palestinian cause. In this process, after Israel's genocide in Gaza, as well as the regime's attack on the Iranian embassy in Damascus, and Iran's response in the form of Operations Sadeq 1 and 2, the level of tension between Iran and the Zionist regime led to direct conflict.
