US blocks payment of Iran's debt to UN: FM Zarif

Tehran (IP) - Iranian Foreign Minister stated that the government had identified a source for paying Iran's debt to the United Nations, but the United States had blocked that.

Iran PressIran News: In response to a question about some statements that economic problems have nothing to do with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Mohammad Javad Zarif on Friday said: "To examine this issue, let's see the country's inflation situation after JCPOA, which was not fully implemented. Then compare those two years with when Trump imposed sanctions."

The Foreign Minister noted: "We must implement the principles of Resistive economy, and certainly it will help us to advance the economy better."

Regarding the loss of Iran's right to vote in the United Nations due to unpaid debt, Zarif said: "We should have paid $16 million to the United Nations for voting rights and debt reduction. The government allocated the money and identified its source from the Islamic Republic's money in South Korea, but the United States prevented the money from being paid into the UN account."

Regarding the sources and amounts of Iranian money blocked in South Korea, he added: "This is not the responsibility of the Foreign Ministry and I do not know anything about it. The responsibility of the Foreign Ministry is to facilitate the work of the central bank and other agencies."
