Iran Press/ Europe News: The resolution proposed by the Islamic Republic of Iran was ratified by the Human Rights Council at the United Nations in Geneva entitled "Strengthening Cooperation and Technical Assistance in Human Rights in Venezuela."
The resolution was prepared and presented on Thursday at the request of Venezuela to demonstrate its goodwill to enhance cooperation with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Iran's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Ismail Baqaei underlined the importance of engagement and cooperation in promoting human rights, stressing the need to avoid dual standards and politicizing the matters in dealing with human rights issues.
Baqaei emphasized that the principles of international law and the UN Charter, in particular, respecting state sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of nations, as well as the acceptance of the principle of the right to self-determination of nations, should be taken into account in dealing with human rights issues.
During resolution adopting, a number of countries, including South Africa, China, Iraq, Uruguay, and Mexico, also welcomed the Venezuelan government's engagement with human rights mechanisms and supported Iran's initiative to draft the resolution.
Meanwhile, the Chinese envoy emphasized the need for Venezuelan people to solve their own problem, described sanctions, and foreign pressure as destructive and non-constructive.
In addition to Canada, a number of Latin American countries, including Argentina, Peru, Brazil, and Chile have demanded a strong approach from the Human Rights Council against Venezuela.
These countries had proposed another resolution to the Human Rights Council, including calling for the establishment of an independent truth-seeking commission to investigate human rights abuses in Venezuela.
Iran's proposed resolution was voted at the request of Peru and several other Latin American countries, including Argentina and Chile, with 18 votes in favor and nine against and 26 countries abstained in this regard.
The Human Rights Council has 47 members and the 42'nd session of the Human Rights Council will end on Friday, October 23.
