Taipei (IP) - Typhoon Kong-rey, one of the strongest to hit Taiwan in recent years, made landfall in southeastern Chongqing, killing at least one person and injuring at least 205, authorities reported.

Iran PressAsia: Authorities reported at least 34 landslides, 162 damaged buildings and 366 downed trees.

Typhoon Kong-rey's impact on Taiwan was severe, leading to widespread disruptions. Over 400 flights, both domestic and international, were grounded, and all ferry services were halted. The storm also caused power outages for more than 250,000 homes.

Taipei came to a standstill as high winds and torrential rain lashed the city. Offices and schools across the island shuttered their doors. Off the northern coast, a tugboat was deployed to rescue a Chinese-registered freighter that was battered by rough seas and abandoned by its crew.
