For comparison, severe flooding in Germany claimed at least 185 lives in 2021. In previous decades, disasters of similar magnitude included 209 deaths in Romania in 1970, while floods in Portugal in 1967 killed nearly 500 people. The recent tragedy in Spain now joins this list of catastrophic European flood events, bringing a fresh call for urgent climate action.
