(IP) - Iran's Team Melli is in group five, with Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan in the preliminary stage.

Iran PressIran news: The AFC qualifying draw ceremony for the FIFA World Cup 2026 occurred on Thursday at the AFC Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The Iranian national football team has been grouped with Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and the playoffs winner between Bhutan and Hong Kong in group five. The other teams in Asia will have three years to find out their opponents for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

This tournament will have 48 participating teams and will be hosted by three countries. Eight teams from Asia are set to take part.

During the initial round, 20 Asian teams at a lower level will face off against one another in a series of matches. The victorious team will then advance to compete against the teams in the second stage.

Thirty-six strong teams from Asia have been divided into nine groups.

After completing this stage, two teams from each group will advance to the next stage. The next stage will consist of three groups of six teams each, and from there, the top eight teams will secure their spot in the FIFA World Cup 2026.
