World Newspapers: Israel Showing No Hint of Shift On Rafah Push
Tuesday, 28 May 2024 20:52
With international condemnation mounting, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel claimed on Monday that the killing of dozens of people a day earlier at a camp for displaced Palestinians in Rafah was “a tragic accident,” but gave no sign of curbing the Israeli offensive in the southern Gaza city. 214
World Newspapers: Hunger surging as an offensive pummels Rafah
Saturday, 25 May 2024 21:19
For weeks, the Gaza Strip’s southernmost city, Rafah, was one of the few places where desperate Gazans could find some aid and food. Bakeries sold bread; and fuel-powered generators; markets were open, if expensive. But since Israeli forces began an incursion in the city this month — effectively closing the two main crossings where aid enters — Rafah has become a place of fear and dwindling supplies. Bakeries have shuttered. So have malnutrition treatment centers. The price of the firewood that many people now use to cook has doubled. Tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers have grown so expensive that they are sold by the piece, not by the kilogram. 214
World newspapers: Big Nations Remain Wary on State for Palestinians
Friday, 24 May 2024 21:25
The decision by Spain, Norway and Ireland to recognize an independent Palestinian state reflects growing exasperation with the Israel of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, even from traditional friends, and suggests that international pressure on him will grow
World newspapers: Netanyahu refuses to change course in Gaza
Wednesday, 22 May 2024 21:57
As the ICC seeks an arrest warrant for Netanyahu, critics in Israel say he is prioritizing his political survival over Israel’s hostages and the war effort.
World newspapers: ICC to consider Israeli leader's arrests
Tuesday, 21 May 2024 21:48
In a stunning announcement, the International Criminal Court’s chief prosecutor said Monday that he was seeking to charge Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with war crimes and crimes against humanity.
World Newspapers: Path of Destruction in Houston
Saturday, 18 May 2024 21:15
At least four people were killed when a powerful storm ripped through Texas. There was widespread damage in the area around Houston, including blown-out windows in storefronts and downtown high-rises, toppled trees, and downed power lines. A powerful storm tore through Texas on Thursday evening, killing at least four people and battering the state with destructive winds and heavy rain. 214
World Newspapers: Nato Considers Sending Troops To Help Ukraine
Friday, 17 May 2024 21:42
NATO allies are inching closer to sending troops into Ukraine to train Ukrainian forces, a move that would be another blurring of a previous red line and could draw the United States and Europe more directly into the war.
World Newspapers: His approval is needed for a cease-fire deal in Gaza
Tuesday, 14 May 2024 21:30
After Hamas attacked Israel in October, leading to the war in Gaza, Israeli leaders described the group’s most senior official in the territory, Yahya Sinwar, as a “dead man walking.” Considering him an architect of the raid, the Israeli regime has portrayed Sinwar’s assassination as a major goal of its aggression against Palestine.
World Newspapers: Audit of Trump zeroes in on disputed accounting
Sunday, 12 May 2024 21:42
Former US President Donald J. Trump used a dubious accounting maneuver to claim improper tax breaks from his troubled Chicago tower, according to an Internal Revenue Service inquiry uncovered by The New York Times and ProPublica. Losing a yearslong audit battle over the claim could mean a tax bill of more than $100 million.
World newspapers: Trapped and facing starvation
Thursday, 25 April 2024 21:27
In Gaza, where Israel has cut off most of the territory’s prewar water and food supplies and war has made farming nearly impossible, the United Nations says famine is likely to set in by the end of May. Aid groups and many governments blame heavy-handed Israeli restrictions on aid to Gaza.
